Retaining Walls Bunbury

Timber Retaining Walls in Bunbury

Where timber is used

The national guide says treated timber sleepers suit low garden walls and budget builds. They are the cheapest of the four materials it prices, and they are often used for garden beds, short steps in a slope and walls that hold only a little soil. Ask whether a wall of your height and purpose suits timber, and why the builder thinks so.

What the guide says it costs

The guide, updated by its publisher on 5 June 2026, gives $250 to $450 per square metre of wall face for treated timber sleepers, installed and including GST. That is the lowest band on its list. It is a national figure, and Bunbury prices can be higher or lower. Ask each builder for a written quote and compare the unit rates.

The trade-off is lifespan

The guide says timber is cheaper upfront but has a shorter life than concrete sleepers. That is the main thing to weigh. A cheaper wall that needs replacing sooner may cost more over time. Ask the builder what warranty is given, what timber is used and what treatment it has, and ask for those details on the quote.

The saving in the example

In its worked example of a 12 metre long, 1 metre high wall, the guide says dropping from concrete to treated timber sleepers would save roughly $1,500 to $2,500. Treat that as a rough guide to the size of the difference, not a promise. Ask the builder to price both materials for your wall, and say which they would choose.

Two low walls or one tall one

The guide says two shorter stepped walls are sometimes cheaper than one tall engineered wall, and often look better on a slope. That suits timber, which is mostly used low. Ask the builder whether a stepped layout fits your block, how much space the steps need and how the planting between them would be drained.

Wet winters and drainage

The Bureau of Meteorology station at Bunbury averages 120.4 days of rain a year, with July the wettest month at 147.3 millimetres. Water that sits behind a wall pushes on it. The guide says agricultural pipe, gravel and weep holes are what stop that. Ask each builder to name every drainage item and where the water leaves.

The 0.5 metre line

The City of South Perth and the City of Joondalup both say a wall of no more than 0.5 metres is exempt from a building permit only if every condition is met, such as not being tied to other building work or protecting neighbouring land. Both are Perth councils. A low timber wall may still need the City of Bunbury's attention.

Fences and walls are different

Both Perth councils say a dividing fence does not qualify to retain soil. A fence on top of a wall sits on the higher ground at the boundary, and the City of Joondalup says a 1.8 metre fence on a wall above 0.5 metres is permitted outside the front setback. Ask the builder whether your wall and fence are one job or two.

Who is responsible

The City of Joondalup says the party that changes the slope by cutting or filling is responsible for building the wall, and that owners must keep walls structurally sound. If a neighbour has changed the ground too, each can be responsible in proportion. This is general council guidance, not legal advice. Ask your own council and take advice in a dispute.

Check the builder

The Western Australian Government register page says to check the name, registration number and licence type, and says builder-work valued over $20,000 needs a registered contractor. It does not say whether a wall counts. Ask the business what registration applies to your job, ask for the number and check it yourself.

Compare quotes

Ask each builder for the length, height, face area, timber type and treatment, post size, footing depth, drainage items, waste removal, permit fees and warranty. The guide says to ask whether the price is fixed or an estimate. A cheap quote that leaves items out can end up costing more once the extras arrive.

Next steps

Read the concrete sleeper and engineered wall guides, then send the form with your suburb, the length of the wall and the slope. Independent builders who work around Bunbury may reply, and you can ask each one about lifespan, drainage and approvals. We do not build walls or check businesses.

How much do timber retaining walls cost?

One national guide gives $250 to $450 per square metre of wall face for treated timber sleepers, installed and including GST. Ask for Bunbury quotes.

How long do timber walls last?

The guide says timber has a shorter life than concrete sleepers. It does not give a number, so ask the builder what warranty they give in writing.

No. Both Perth councils we cite say a dividing fence does not qualify to retain soil. Ask the builder to plan the wall and fence separately.

Does a low timber wall need a permit?

A wall of 0.5 m or less can be exempt if it meets every condition. Ask the City of Bunbury or your shire about your wall.
