Where the numbers come from
The guide is the Karven retaining wall cost guide for 2026, marked as updated on 5 June 2026. It says its figures are estimates for Australian residential work, include materials and professional installation, and include GST. We read it on 31 October 2026 and copied each range as printed. The publisher builds software for tradies who quote, so treat it as a starting point and not a neutral price list.
Price is per square metre of face
The guide prices a wall by the area of its face, which is height times length. A long, low wall is far cheaper than a short, tall one of the same footprint. It gives a general range of about $250 to $1,000 or more per square metre. Ask every builder to state length, height and the resulting face area, so you can compare like with like.
Why height matters most
The guide says soil pressure climbs fast as a wall gets taller, so a wall 2 metres high needs far more than twice the structure of one 1 metre high. It also says walls over roughly 1 metre, sometimes 600 millimetres, usually need an engineer's design and an approval. The guide states this for Australia generally. Ask the City of Bunbury what applies to your wall.
A worked example from the guide
The guide builds a 12 metre long, 1 metre high concrete sleeper wall: $3,200 for sleepers and posts, $1,800 for footings and excavation, $900 for drainage and backfill and $2,400 for labour, about $8,300 in all. It says that is roughly $690 a square metre once drainage and footings are in. Treated timber would save about $1,500 to $2,500. These are the guide's figures, not a Bunbury price.
What can push a price up
The guide lists height, drainage and backfill, footings and posts, and site access and ground conditions. Rock, reactive clay, a steep slope or a wall reachable only by hand can add hundreds to a wall in any city. Bunbury's rain, 737.3 millimetres a year at the Bureau of Meteorology station, makes the drainage line one to read closely.
What may sit outside a headline rate
Permit fees, a building surveyor's certificate, an engineer's design, removal of old walls or soil, and extra excavation may or may not be inside a per-square-metre price. The City of Bunbury publishes a building schedule of fees and charges for 2026 to 2027. Ask each builder to list what they include and what you pay separately.
What a quote should list
Ask for length, height, face area, material, footing depth, drainage pipe and gravel, weep holes, waste removal, any approvals and who pays for them, and the warranty in writing. The guide says to check whether the price is fixed or an estimate, because a fixed price protects you if the ground is worse than expected.
How to use these figures
Take a range, multiply it by your own face area and see whether a quote is wildly off. Do not treat the result as a budget. Ask three builders to price the same wall, ask each to explain any large gap and check every price with the business quoting. Check the name and number of the builder on the state register before paying a deposit.
