Retaining Walls Bunbury

Natural Stone Retaining Walls in Bunbury

When stone is chosen

The national guide describes natural rock and sandstone block as the choice for feature walls and premium landscaping. People choose stone for how it looks, rather than only for what it costs. Ask the builder what job the wall has to do, how high it must be and whether the look you want can be built within your budget.

What the guide says it costs

The guide, updated by its publisher on 5 June 2026, gives $500 to $1,000 or more per square metre of wall face for natural rock or sandstone block, installed and including GST. It is the top band on its list, and it says feature stone pushes the total higher. That is a national range. Ask for a written quote for your wall.

Ask about the stone

Stone differs in size, shape, weight, colour and source. Ask the builder what stone is quoted, where it comes from, whether it is cut or natural, how it is delivered and what happens if the supply changes before the job starts. A photograph or a sample on site helps you check the finished look against the quote.

Weight and footings

The guide says harder ground, rock or a surcharge load such as a driveway means deeper and stronger footings. A stone wall is heavy, and the footings need to suit the weight and the soil. We give no structural advice. Ask the builder what footing depth is quoted, and whether an engineer's design is part of the price.

Height still sets the price

The guide says the price is driven far more by height and soil pressure than by length. A tall stone wall can cost far more than a low one of the same footprint. Stepping a tall wall into two shorter ones is sometimes cheaper and looks better on a slope. Ask the builder whether a stepped layout would suit your block.

Water behind stone

A stone face can hide the back of a wall, so it is easy to forget the drainage. The guide says agricultural pipe, free-draining gravel backfill and weep holes keep water from pushing a wall over. Ask what is quoted, where it exits and how the face of the wall is kept clear of soil and silt.

Bunbury's weather

The Bureau of Meteorology station at Bunbury records a mean annual rainfall of 737.3 millimetres and an annual mean of 11.1 days at or above 35 degrees. Its highest temperature is 40.8 degrees and its lowest is minus 3.0. A wall faces both wet winters and hot summers. Ask the builder how materials and fixings cope with both.

Permit and approval steps

The City of Bunbury says building work may need a permit, and it lists certified and uncertified paths. The City of South Perth says a wall that retains no more than 0.5 metres is exempt only if every condition is met. Neither is a guarantee for your wall. Ask the council that covers your address, and ask who applies.

Boundaries and neighbours

The City of Joondalup says a wall may cross a boundary only with written agreement from all affected neighbours, and that a dividing fence goes on the higher ground of a wall. A feature wall near a fence line is a common place for disputes. Ask the builder to keep the wall within your lot unless the neighbour agrees in writing.

Registration check

The state register page says builder-work valued over $20,000 needs a registered building service contractor. It says to check the name, registration number and licence type. It does not say whether a stone wall is covered. Ask each business which registration applies, ask for the number and look it up yourself.

What a quote should list

Ask for the stone type, source, face area, height, footings, drainage, waste removal, any design and permit fees and the warranty. The guide says to confirm whether the price is fixed or an estimate. Compare the same wall from three builders, and ask each to explain any gap that you cannot account for.

Next steps

Read the cost guide and the engineered wall guide, then send the form with your suburb, the wall length and a photo of the area. Independent builders who work around Bunbury may reply, and you can ask each one about stone supply, footings and approvals. We do not build walls or check businesses.
